Watch That Movie

Hugh had never seen the movie "Top Gun" before he got on the transatlantic flight to take him from London to Los Angeles. However, he had heard that it was good and was pleased to see that it was due to be shown during the flight. After lunch, "Top Gun" was screened, but Hugh did not bother to watch it even though he had a clear view of the screen and the sound and picture quality were fine. Why not?

Puzzle Answer

Answer:

The movie was shown twice on the flight, once before lunch and once after lunch. Hugh watched it the first time and was therefore not interested the second time.

MAKING A CHAIN

I have six sections of chain, each consisting of four links. If the cost of cutting open a link is 10 cents, and of welding it together again, 25 cents, how much will it cost me to have the six pieces joined into one chain?

Puzzle Answer

Answer:

The cost is $1.40. The most economical plan is to cut open all four links of one section and use these four to join the five remaining sections together.

Answer:

DIGGING A DITCH

Here is a curious question that is more perplexing than it looks at first sight. Abraham, an infirm old man, undertook to dig a ditch for two dollars. He engaged Benjamin, an able-bodied fellow, to assist him and share the money fairly according to their capacities. Abraham could dig as fast as Benjamin could shovel out the dirt, and Benjamin could dig four times as fast as Abraham could do the shoveling.
How should they divide the money? Of course, we must assume their relative abilities for work to be the same in digging or shoveling.

$1.00

I have only nickels, dimes, and quarters and have at least one of each type of coin. The total number of coins I have is fifteen and the total value of all the coins is $1.00. How many of each coin do I have?

Answer:

Thirteen nickels, one dime, and one quarter

The cleverest way to solve this problem is to try to reduce the number of possibilities to a minimum and then figure out all of those possibilities. The highest number of quarters I can have is three, since if I have at least one of every coin, I can't have four quarters (and I can't have more than four quarters because the total would be more than $1). So, if I have three quarters, I am left with fourteen dimes/nickels, which most add up to 25 cents. That's impossible, so suppose I have two quarters. That leaves 50 cents for the dimes/nickels. I can't get fourteen dimes/nickels that add up to 50 cents. So, try one quarter. I have 75 cents left. I can get thirteen nickels and one dime to total 75 cents.

PRECURSORY

If you don't know the meaning of the word PRECURSORY, which of the following words do you think means the opposite of PRECURSORY?

(a) flamboyant

(b) succeeding

(c) cautious

(d) simple

(e) not planned

Answer:

(b) succeeding

PRE means before; CURS means to run. So, PRECURSORY means to run (or go) before. The opposite is running or going after, or "succeeding."
